米国大使公邸でザ・ビッグゲームを観戦

11月22日に開催されたザ・ビッグゲームをスタンフォード同窓会の皆さんと共にジョン・ルース米国大使のご招待により大使公邸でモニター観戦する機会に恵まれました。朝9時に同大使館に集合、9時30分のキックオフから正午まで約２時間半に亘り大型モニターの前で両校の同窓生約100人がそれぞれのチームを熱心に応援し、エールを交換しました。
このイベントは本年8月に日本に着任されたルース大使がご夫妻ともスタンフォード大の同窓とのことで、当初大使館で同大の同窓会での観戦会を企画されていたようですが、やはり両校の同窓生が集まって応援したほうが盛り上がるとのことで、UCB同窓会にも声掛りがあり、急遽集合をかけることになりました。急な案内で人数が揃うか心配されましたがCALメンバーは約半数を占め面目躍如でした。ニュースでも報道されましたが、当日は大変多忙の中、スタンフォード大卒業の鳩山総理が来館、幸夫人もポンポンを持って応援に駆けつけられました。（写真参照）公邸の館内には大型テレビがセットされ、特別回線により同時中継でゲームを観戦することが出来ました。
ディフェンスに課題のあるCALは前半スタンフォードに押され気味でしたが、折り返しの休み時間に、大使に記念品を贈呈し、シャツの襟にゴールデンベアーのピンをつけさせて頂き、合わせて鳩山総理の襟にも同じくゴールデンベアーのピンを付けさせて頂くと後半には盛り返し、ついには勝利を収めることが出来ました。この間、それぞれのチームの応援で大いに盛り上がり、両校の同窓生は終始和気あいあいの中で歓談し、大変よい交流の場となりました。
おわりに本イベントの実施に向けて、時間の無い中調整して頂いた二宮さん、坂崎さん、古屋さん始め関係者にお礼申し上げます。ルース大使にはこれに懲りずに、また、次回も呼んで頂けることを期待しています。

Dear Berkeley Alumni,
Ambassador and Ms. Roos would like to invite you and your spouse or partner to
join them for the Cal-Stanford game on November 22 at 9 am at the US
Ambassador's Residences of U.S. Embassy. We plan to have a total of 30 alumni
and spouses attending the occasion, and we may have to select on a
first-come-first basis if more than 30 people wish to attend.
Kindly include the following information in your reply to the UC Berkeley Alumni
Office, attention: Sachiko Furukawa:
1. Your full name / spouse’s name if he/she is attending
2. Your organization name and title
3. Day-time contact number

PS: As you have already received an invitation from Young Bears to a
get-together at Roppongi Sports Bar on the November 22 at 9:00 am, the function
at US Embassy coincide with Young Bears. You could choose either location, but
please respond as soon as possible.
