Dr. Dave Patterson was invited by CAAJ to the Tokyo American Club for lunch on Tuesday, January 22.  Prof. Patterson was visiting Tokyo to receive the C&C Award together with Dr. John Hennessy, Chancellor of Stanford University. The NEC sponsored awards are given to them for the outstanding advancement of computer technology based on RISC Architecture, developed by Drs. Patterson and Hennesey, following the last yearfs winner, Dr. Gordon Moore, the Chairman Emeritus of Intel Corporation.

Prof. Patterson was congratulated by senior members of CAAJ headed by Mr. Tetsuo Kondo, Chairman Emeritus of CAAJ. Over the lunch, he, a native Californian, holding UCLA degrees and started his career with Boeing, addressed a number of stimulating topics in the computer industry of today and future. Answering questions from CAAJ members, he said the industry will keep providing most interesting and challenging subjects years down the road.

After the lunch, Dr. Patterson illustrated vividly how the Cal program of computer science is rated as the world top class, using unique slide show and statistics, especially by highlighting comparison with major competing schools including Stanford.

His masterpiece was the video composed of film recording of the Big Game of 1982 and computer graphic animation reviving how Cal Golden Bears beat Cardinal in the last seconds. The focus was made on the scene of the Cal captain who released the ball before his knee had been touched on the pitch by the hard tackle from Cardinal defense. It was clearly seen that the play was on as his knee was inches away from the surface of the pitch when he threw the ball to the receiver of the pass.

Very interesting work and we all thank Dr. Patterson for the show.

Once again, congratulation on winning the award, Dr. Patterson!
