Reception Party Hosted by UC President Robert C. Dynes
Tokyo, Oct. 21, 2007

UC President Robert C. Dynes and his staff hosted a party for the alumni of the 10 campuses of the University of California at the Roppongi Hills Club, located on the 51st floor of the Mori Tower, Roppongi, Tokyo. About 200 alumni were invited. The party started with opening messages from the president's staff, who explained the status of the University of California and its ten campuses. Next, President Dynes give a speech entitled "The Promise and Power of 10," which was followed by a question-and-answer session.

Summary of President Dyne's speech

President Dynes has been in the office for 4 years, and the University of California now has 10 campuses. They are Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz, each having its unique characteristics. The university has about 220,000 students across its 10 campuses, surpassing the total of other private univer-sities such as Harvard. President Dynes called the name of each campus, asking its alumni to raise their hands, and it turned out that alumni from all the campuses, except for Merced established two years ago, were present.

In "The Promise and Power of 10," President Dynes explained that the University of California plays an important role, not only in research and education, but also in service to the public--which is one of the duties of a public university. The platform of the University of California consists of (1) "R & D & D", that is, Research and Development plus Delivery to Society, (2) International Strategy, and (3) Change Education in California. Nowadays, international cooperation is essential for solving major problems associated with global warming, the environment, energy and world health. For this purpose, he has traveled all around the world to exchange opinions with alumni in various countries, in addition to the alumni in the USA. The total number of UC alumni amounts to 1.4 million.

The president oversees the 10 campuses and is involved in preparing a five-year strategic management plan for the entire system. The University's budget comes from the State of California, cooperating companies, students' fee, and other sources, and the president is responsible for allocating the budget effectively among the 10 campuses. Furthermore, the president's task is to have each campus share its unique resources so joint projects can be effectively implemented. For example, a project in Quantum Biological Science is to be carried out through cooperation among Santa Cruz, San Francisco, and Berkeley.
