Message from President

More than 100 days have passed since the colossal disasters hit the eastern
part of Japan on March 11, 2011. It was a bad combination of natural
disasters and human errors. Japan had prepared poorly for a magnitude 9.0
earthquake, a tsunami with 35-meter-high waves, and possible nuclear power
plant meltdowns.
I sincerely appreciate your responses to support the region and people
affected by the earthquake and tsunami. I have heard that many fellow
alumni, acting independently of the UC Berkeley Japan Alumni Association,
have donated generous amounts of money as individuals and through group
affiliations. For example, my colleagues and I at the Hitotsubashi Knowledge
Management Forum donated 5 million yen. Moreover, Mr. Masayoshi Son (BA in
Economics ’80) made a personal donation of 10 billion yen (about US 120
million dollars)—an unheard of amount in post-war Japan. Besides monetary
contributions, some members have selflessly donated their time to work in
the disaster zones as volunteers.
The Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 is a disaster many times larger than
the terrible Great Hanshin (Kobe) Earthquake of 1995. Restoring
infrastructure and people’s daily lives is an urgent agenda. We should,
without question, continue to support the sufferers physically and
psychologically. At the same time, however, we have to address fundamental
problems that we inherited from our predecessors. I would like to urge you
to contribute to the creative reconstruction of Japan.
Since I was elected president of this alumni association, I have presided
over the UC Berkeley Japan Knowledge Plaza events—events for Japanese and
non-Japanese residents of Japan—aiming to inspire a spirit of innovative in
Japan. In light of Japan’s recent history, I think this spirit is more
important than ever. I cordially invite you to participate in our Knowledge
Plaza events and contribute to the revitalization of Japan.
I am also grateful for your participation in our other alumni activities and
your special attention to our Website, which aims to facilitate
communication and networking among UC Berkeley alumni and friends in Japan
and around the world.
東日本大震災が発生してから早くも100日以上を数えることになりました。大災害はマグニチュード9.0、35メートルにも及ぶ津波という自然災害でもありましたが、同時に人災という側面もありました。最悪の場合に備えて十分な準備をしてこなかったためという要素もあったからです。
3.11震災に際して、同窓会の皆様が被災地に、そして被災者に対して直ちにお見舞い、支援をお寄せいただいたことに感謝します。UCバークレー同窓会としては何をしようと、何をせよということをしませんでしたが、仄聞いたしますところ、大変多くの方がお見舞いを寄託くださり、なかにはボランティアとして現地にお出かけくださったとのことです。私自身も、一橋大学の知識フォーラムの同僚とともに500万円を寄付させていただきましたが、卒業生の中には、孫正義さん（econ BA1980）のように、100億円と、戦後の日本では聞かないような額の寄付を申し出た人もいます。
被災地のこと、被災者のことは一日たりとも忘れることなく物理的にも心理的にも支持していかなければならないことは申すまでもありません。しかしながら同時に「創造的復興」に向けて知恵を絞っていかなくてはならないと固く信じます。今回の災害は神戸大震災の何十倍の被害をもたらすものであり、その時の何倍もの知恵なしには復興は不可能だからです。
私は本同窓会の会長に就任してから、「日本を元気にする」を旗印にUCバークレー知の広場というものを主宰してきました。震災を経験した今、日本を元気にし、震災以前にも増すイノベイティブな日本を建設するという精神はこれまで以上に大事だと思います。皆様には是非このバークレー知の広場に参加くだり、日本の再生に向け知恵をさずけていただきたく存じます。そしてまた同窓生の間のコミュニケーションの活発化のために、このホームページの活用も呼びかけたいと思います。

This Home Page of UCB-JAA
(University of California, Berkeley, Japan Alumni Association) has been
opened for the purpose of expanding alumni activities and sharing
information among the alumni. The UCB-JAA is an alumni organization for
persons who have studied at UCB. The number of registered members now
exceeds 1,800.
As you know, Berkeley’s academic departments consistently rank among the top
five in USA, and especially, 35 of Berkeley’s 36 graduate programs ranked in
the top 10 in their fields. It is
a source of
pride and encouragement to us
that many members of this association have produced excellent results,
continuing their remarkable activities in various fields in this country as
well as abroad.
I am deeply grateful for your
special attention to the alumni activities despite your daily busy schedule.
Owing to your active participation and cooperation, through the events or
local activities associated with this association, mutual friendship among
the members as well as cultural exchange with UCB people is being promoted
widely and more substantially, to which I again express my thanks.
Contributions to this Home Page are
anticipated from many alumni members. Please send your news or account to
the officer in charge or to
the office of the alumni association, where it
will be edited and appear in the Home Page. From now on as ever I will do my best to better UCB-JAA, so please send your
requests to the alumni office at your convenience. I again beg your

この度、同窓会の発展と会員相互の情報の共有化を目的として、ＵＣバークレー日本同窓会のホームページを開設することになりました。ＵＣバークレー日本同窓会は、ＵＣバークレーの学窓で励んだ経験を持たれる方々の日本同窓会で、当会々員に登録されている方は
１８００名を超えております。
ご存じのように、ＵＣバークレーは、学術的に常に全米のトップ５を維持しており、特に大学院の科目では３６科目中３５が全米のトップ１０に入っております。また、当会会員の皆様が、国の内外を問わずさまざまな分野で
既に大きな成果を挙げられ、又 目覚しいご活動を継続されていることは、私達の誇りであり心強い励ましでございます。
また、平素ご多用の毎日をお過ごしにも拘わらず、同窓会活動に対し格別のご高配を賜りまして深く感謝致しております。
皆様の積極的なご参加とご協力のお蔭によりまして、当会の催しや各地域における諸活動を通じた会員相互および母校関係者との交流が、いよいよ多彩に、より充実したものへと発展しつつあることに対しあらためて御礼を申し上げます。
